Friday Follies #252 – Making Grammar Great Again, One Hyphen at a Time

Hey, Friday Follies fans! Time once again for another round of frightful faux-pas!

  1. Our knuckles can continue to grow even if the rest of our body doesn’t. Weight gain or loss can effect your finger size too.
  2. Social media has supercharged the propensity to regard one’s personal identity as a potential source of profit…
  3. GET PRIVILAGED ACCESS TO THE LARGEST COMEDY FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD WITH THE JUST FOR LAUGHS 2020 PASSPORTS

.

.

And the corrections:

  1. Okay, the first sentence is just a decoy. There’s nothing wrong with it. (*ducking*) The second sentence, however, contains an all-too-common error in “effect,” which should be affect, because it’s a verb: The weather affects the growth of plants. As a noun, we write: their growth is an effect of the weather. (There are a couple of exceptions to this rule, but there’s no time or space right now; we’ll get to it later on. Remind me. 😆)
  2. This is one of the Grammar Cop’s most maddening mistakes she sees, like a splinter in your finger, a pebble in your shoe, an eyelash in your eye…  Anyway, it’s this: media is plural. So it should say: Social media have supercharged the… (The singular word is medium.)
  3. This abomination is in all-caps now to show you exactly how it appeared in an ad… with privilege misspelled in such an unsightly manner. Take note: sometimes a spellchecker doesn’t work when you type in all caps!

Presenting this little tableau of transgressions has been a privilege! Have a safe, peaceful week, FFers!
