Friday Follies #47 – 3 mistakes that make me go “Arghhh”!

Welcome back to Friday Follies! The Grammar Cop has found three annoying errors to share with her fellow finicky grammarians.

  1. THE SUBURBAN: Yes, once again this local paper does not disappoint in our weekly Mistakes Sweepstakes. “I have noticed an increase in the number of borough public events payed for with our taxes…” Ouch! How that “payed” escaped everyone’s notice is beyond me. Of course the past tense of “pay” is paid.
  2. THE SUBURBAN (again): The advertiser is half to blame for this one, gleaned from an  ad: Dr. So-and-so – Family Dentistry – Bridges – Implants – Dentures – All with a    “Gentle” Touch!   Listen here, Dr. So-and-so and The Suburban: There is no reason for the word gentle to be in quotation marks. In fact, the quotes make it look as if the dentist’s touch isn’t really gentle; he’s just pretending!
  3. SPECTATOR.ORG: “The public and the press duly wrapped Trump’s knuckles.” Say it with me: Arghh! That should be rapped.

Sometimes I would like to rap the knuckles of all the perpetrators of careless writing that I come across.

  1. I saw the error as I read it, but I think there are many who would like to “wrap” the knucles of both major candidates. Better still, I’d like to wrap up the mouth of one of them with very sticky tape. Keep those mistakes coming! It’s good to keep me on my toes.
