Once again, I, self-appointed Grammar Cop, call out the media for this week’s goofs. As usual they were not hard to find (the goofs, not the media)!
Unfortunately I have temporarily lost my police badge due to copyright reasons, but you know that I am a:
Here are some of the worst offenders this week:
- “…she’s forced to hoover up funds from a bizarre little “kill club” lead by Lyle…” – THE SUBURBAN (local weekly). Need I point out that the past tense of lead is led?
- “Apartments (studio’s, one or two bedrooms)…” – THE SUBURBAN ad. Does the studio possess something? No! It’s simply studios plural.
- Runner-up for Goof of the Week: “…how the world would marvel at a city fixing it’s social ills.” – THE SUBURBAN – guilty yet again! This was in the editorial, no less. (They have repeatedly refused my offer of reasonably priced proofreading services, by the way.) The possessive of it is ITS. No apostrophe.
- And the Goof of the Week is: “TRUMPS LEADS FIELD INTO GOP DEBATE” – MONTREAL GAZETTE. Yep, this screaming headline in our only English daily proclaims that apparently there are many Donald Trumps running for the Republican nomination. (Lord preserve us.) Technically I assume this is a mere typo, which I try to ignore during my Grammar Cop rounds, due to the sheer number of them around… but what a bad one, in a major headline! Right under his picture, by the way. Arghhh!
Grammar Cop will return next week with this regular report. There are no shortage of culprits, it seems.
